Vicki Richards Upchurch was honored September 12, 2015 at the Women of Excellence Gala held at The Norris Center, Houston, TX. She represented the Council of Businesswomen.

This honoree awards gala is conducted annually by the Federation of Houston Professional Women (FHPW). FHPW has served as a unifying organization for Houston area organizations for more than 30 years. A 501(C)(6) nonprofit organization, FHPW exists to advance the educational and professional development of women’s organizations and their members, as well as to promote networking opportunities amongst members. Taxes on Sodas?

Recently I received two emails referencing diabetes. One was from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation publishing the findings of a feasibility study of implementing a nationwide tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). The other was from a client telling me about his major decrease in his A1C levels. Since we’re in the midst of an epidemic rise in Diabetes Type 2, I read both with great interest.

Studies are being done on taxing your SSBs. Taxes on sodas? Consider the cigarette tax: cigarettes were first taxed by our federal government in1862. Iowa became the first to levy taxes at a state level in 1921 and by 1969 all states were taxing cigarettes. Has this affected the amount of smokers? Yes. The greater the amount of tax increase, the greater the proportion of smokers who have stopped smoking. The same principle may apply to SSBs as well. [Read more…] about Taxes on Sodas?

Scientists Use Twitter to Predict Spread of an Infectious Disease

From RWJ Foundation:  “A new study suggests that information shared via Twitter can be used to predict the extent and severity of infectious disease outbreaks like the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Philip Polgreen, M.D., and his colleagues at the University of Iowa, collected and analyzed public tweets relating to the 2009 H1N1 outbreak to see if they could track the spread of H1N1 more rapidly than current methods.
