Where the Heck is Andorra and Macau???
Did you know that for the first time ever, it has been predicted the children being born in this country today will not have the same life expectancy as our generation? The trend has been that each generation’s life expectancy would increase and we’ve always assumed this would continue indefinitely. After all we live in the United States. The New England Journal of Medicine predicts this trend is due to reverse itself primarily due to the explosion of childhood obesity.
I decided to look up some data as to how our country fares for life expectancy vs. all other countries. What I found was startling! Andorra and Macau are small and not well-known countries in the world yet they are ranked first and second place in life expectancies. Where are these countries? I found Andorra located in the Pyrenees mountains bordered by Spain and France and Macau is an island in the South China Sea.
Japan ranks 3rd in the world for life expectancy. Their new hip word for obesity is “metabo” which is short for metabolic syndrome. Most Americans have never even heard of metabolic syndrome and frankly I doubt most healthcare professionals (including physicians and nurses) really have either unless they’re in cardiology or integrative medicine. Everyone is so busy it’s hard to keep up with everything! But in Japan the government decided to start a most ambitious campaign to curtail this syndrome which, simply stated, is the combination of obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol (not the scientific definition).
In Japan, the Ministry of Health set a goal for waist measurements: males less than 33.5” in circumference and females less than 35.4”. Every employee between the ages of 40 and 74 must meet their goal or there will be financial penalties placed on these companies. WOW! When are the Japanese ever overweight? Apparently Western influence, aka “fast food,” has invaded Japan as well as all the rest of us and the Japanese have realized just how costly weight gain is and have decided to try to put a stop to it.
So, where does the U.S. rank? I found us after countries like Australia, France, Canada, the U.K. and finally down to 48th place! What is the reason for this? After all don’t we go to our physicians quite readily and enjoy some of the best health care in the world?
We need to stop telling people they have a slightly elevated cholesterol level, a little high blood pressure, are a little overweight, etc. In other words we need to be honest and tell them Americans die more from heart disease than any other disease and the reason is our lifestyle choices. By the way American physicians recommend males should have a <40” waist circumference and females <35.” Don’t guess at yours. Most people underestimate their waist size so measure yours in the privacy of your home. You may be surprised.

TIME TO QUIT!!!
I just read that cigarette taxes are going through the roof. Although this increase typically doesn’t affect higher income groups (because they can still afford them), research has proven increasing taxes helps more people make the decision to quit this time. The latest research also says the most effective way to quit is with a combination therapy: drugs and behavioral modification. www.nicorette.com is offering a $5 off coupon on their website and many people have had great success with Chantix. I won’t recommend any drugs. Speak with your physician. However, come see me regarding ways to implement behavioral changes. You will receive many helpful suggestions. Many people need someone with whom they feel accountable to when faced with a tough dilemma like smoking, and yet not feel judged because they smoke.
