Greetings from LIFESTYLE CHOICES!
Just Practicing
Gosh, I’ve never seen so many people filled with so much anger! Is it just a fad? Everywhere I go people are mad and complaining about so many things: our government, immigration, healthcare; you name it. While I am glad to see complacency disappear, I’m concerned about both the effects this is having on the people who are angry as well as the people surrounding them. Yes, many of these topics are quite volatile but just how much of your time do you spend thinking about what’s wrong with things and not what’s right?
Have you noticed that people who are happy don’t spend much time commiserating with others?
I go to the gym frequently and one particular fellow I see there is quite interesting. He works out hard and I mean he works out hard everyday. But you know what he does while he’s warming up on the bike or when he’s in between machines? He’s complaining to anyone and everyone in his proximity. In all the years I’ve been going there I’ve never once heard him carry on a nice, easy going conversation. If he’s talking politics, he’s going to talk about the enemy, his enemy. That would be the party he’s against. One day I decided I needed to request he refrain from such negative talk while I was around (he speaks in a very loud voice). I told him I was there to exercise and decrease my stress, not increase it. While I asked him nicely, he was quite taken aback but still honored my request. That happened a couple of years ago and although I know he still does his complaining, he always refrains from being loud and obnoxious around me. I am truly grateful for that.
But you know what’s so sad? Here he is exercising to have good health but is damaging his body because of his intense anger. The stress hormone, Cortisol, will stay in our systems for quite some time after we’ve cooled off. We might be through complaining but the damage is still being done. And although we may not be talking about it, how many of our thoughts continue with this negativity? Oh and the poor person who is being subjected to this diatribe? She’s also experiencing the same damage. Possibly not due to the subject matter but due to the toxic energy being emitted from the speaker.
Notice who you’re hanging around with and what you’re talking about. As parents we have often told our kids not to hang around certain people. Are you hanging around angry people? Are you an angry person? Harboring resentments activates a cascade of events within your body which negatively affect your nervous, hormonal, immune, and cardiac systems. If you become angry about something, deal with the situation when you can do so in an appropriate manner and then let it go. If you don’t deal with it in a mature fashion, try again the next time. Practice! It’s truly just a habit and habits can be changed.
If you want to attract positive people and positive experiences, start looking for them and intentionally make your life happy!
